The slump for first-time Grand Slam winners went from legend to reality for women’s No. 2 seed Garbine Muguruza on Thursday. The last eight first-time Grand Slam winners failed to make it past the quarterfinals in their following Grand Slam and now you can add Muguruza to that list after she fell to unseeded Jana Cepelova in the second round on Thursday.
2016 Wimbledon scores and results: Garbine Muguruza upset in 2nd round
Weeks after winning her first Grand Slam, Garbine Muguruza is out of Wimbledon in the second round.

Muguruza, 22, played in her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2015, where she fell to world No. 1 Serena Williams. She made it to her second major final in the French Open just a few weeks ago where she played Williams again, but this time she came out on top. But she lost her first match since then in the Wimbledon tune-up and was pushed to three sets in her Wimbledon opener against Camila Giorgi.
On Thursday, she looked frustrated and completely out of her element as Cepelova dominated her in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. It’s back to the drawing board for the world No. 2.
Play at Wimbledon had an awful lot to get through on Thursday thanks to rain delays on both Tuesday and Wednesday, but Thursday saw the weather cooperating a whole lot more. Men’s second seed Andy Murray took down Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 and looked good doing it. Murray was pushed to five sets in each of his first two matches at the French Open and he was clearly tired when he faced Novak Djokovic in the finals.
Kei Nishikori was pushed to four sets but came out on top over Julien Benneteau, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. There was a minor upset on the men’s side when No. 16 Gilles Simon fell to unseeded Grigor Dimitrov in four sets. Dimitrov is an inconsistent player who has at times shown the potential of a top-five player, but on Thursday he was all business in his victory.
Men’s No. 13 seed David Ferrer and women’s No. 7 seed Belinda Bencic were the other surprise eliminations on Thursday. Ferrer was completely dominated by the unseeded Nicolas Mahut, who won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Bencic was down a set to Julia Boserup when she retired from the match.
