Andy Murray wins 2016 Wimbledon men’s championship

Andy Murray has won the men’s singles championship at Wimbledon for the second time in his career, beating Milos Raonic in straight sets on Sunday. Murray, the second seed, became the favorite in the tournament when Novak Djokovic was upset in the third round and beat Raonic, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2)

For Murray, it’s his first Grand Slam title since he won Wimbledon in 2013. In recent years, he’s been playing excellent, consistent tennis, but he’s been unable to get through the likes of Djokovic and other top players in the finals of Grand Slams. With Djokovic out in the third round and Roger Federer losing to Raonic in the semifinals, the title was Murray’s for the taking.

The first set was pretty routine for Murray, though the one surprising thing is how well he handled Raonic’s serve. Murray is fantastic as a returner, but Raonic’s serve was dominant throughout the tournament. Murray got the one break exactly when he needed it, and finished off the set with a strong service game of his own to take the early lead.

In the second set, things were much closer, though Murray once again threatened to break Raonic at 3-3, but the Canadian fought off the break and held serve. But it wasn’t long before Murray came back and eventually forced a tiebreak, one that he was dominant in.

The third set was a mirror of the second, with Raonic serving tough and Murray being unable to break him until they reached a tiebreak, where Murray again dominated. He closed out the tiebreak to get the win over Raonic and another title to his name.

It was Raonic’s first ever Grand Slam final. He was trying to become the first Canadian man to win a Grand Slam title, but now he’ll go back to the drawing board after making it further than he’s ever been before. Previously, the furthest Raonic had been was the semifinals at the Australian Open earlier this year. There, he also lost to Murray.
