The women’s quarterfinals at Wimbledon were played on Tuesday and there were no significant surprises. Top seed Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals after downing No. 21 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The draw has been kind to Williams once again, with players like Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska already out of the tournament.

The Williams sisters are both into the semifinals at Wimbledon, though they are on opposite sides of the draw and can only meet in the finals.

Williams will face an unseeded opponent -- Elena Vesnina -- in the semifinals on Thursday. Vesnina made it to the semifinals by taking down No. 19 seed Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Williams cannot overlook Vesnina by any means, but it’s been a fortunate draw to say the least.
On the other side, No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber made it through No. 5 seed Simona Halep in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6(2). Kerber is the favorite to battle Williams in the finals, though her semifinals opponent is no pushover. Venus Williams, Serena’s sister and the eighth seed in the tournament, took down Yaroslava Shvedova in her quarterfinals match, winning 7-6(5), 6-2.
Also in action on Tuesday was the conclusion of a fourth-round match between men’s 10th seed Tomas Berdych and Jiri Vesely. The match was delayed going into the fifth set, and Berdych wound up taking the match overall, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7), 6-7(9), 6-3. Berdych advances to the men’s semifinals where he will face Lucas Pouille, the No. 32 seed in the tournament.
The men’s quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday. They also include a match between No. 2 Andy Murray and No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a match between No. 3 Roger Federer and No. 9 Marin Cilic and one between No. 6 Milos Raonic and the 28th-seeded American who eliminated Novak Djokovic, Sam Querrey.
