2016 US Open scores and bracket: Angelique Kerber, Rafael Nadal win on Day 1

Kerber, the second seed who could take the top ranking from Serena Williams, made quick work of her opening day opponent on Monday.

The 2016 US Open got underway on Monday. The final Grand Slam of the year promises to be a good one hot on the heels of the Summer Olympics. Top seeds from both brackets were in action, though Serena Williams won’t see the court until Tuesday.

Angelique Kerber, the second seed for the women and silver medalist at the recent Olympics, easily breezed through her opening round opponent, Polona Hercog. Specifically, she breezed through the first set and took it, 6-0, and Hercog retired from the match at the beginning of the second set, officially giving Kerber a 6-0, 1-0 win to move on to the second round.

Rafael Nadal, the fourth seed for the men, made it through his first-round opponent, Denis Istomin, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Istomin is a tough draw for the opening round, but Nadal looked great in fending him off. Milos Raonic, the fifth seed, took down a similarly tough opening round opponent in Dustin Brown, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Garbine Muguruza, the third seed and one of three women who could wind up taking the top world ranking from Serena Williams here at the US Open, looked like she was going to suffer an upset when she dropped her opening set to Elise Mertens. But Muguruza fought back and dominated in the second and third sets, winning, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Roberta Vinci, the women’s seventh seed, was the first winner of the day. She got play started at Arthur Ashe Stadium bright and early by besting German Anna-Lena Friedsam in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

No. 7 Marin Cilic, No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 10 Gael Monfils all were in action on Monday and all took straight-set victories over opponents Rogerio Dutra Silva, Guido Andreozzi and Gilles Muller, respectively. Other top seeds in action for the women included No. 9 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova and No. 13 Johanna Konta, and all three women advanced to the second round with victories on Monday.

Novak Djokovic was also in action on Monday. The men’s top seed played late on the main court, and took down Jerzy Janowicz, but he was pushed to four sets in the match. Djokovic dropped the second set, but won, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Upsets

On the men’s side, Richard Gasquet found himself taking an early exit from the tournament when he lost in straight sets to unseeded Kyle Edmund of Great Britain. Edmund took Gasquet down, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. The only other seeded man to fall was No. 28 Martin Klizan, who lost in straight sets to Mikhail Youzhny.

But on the women’s side, there were several upsets. None occurred with the top seeds, but Monica Puig, the No. 32 seed and gold medalist from the recent Olympics, found herself on the losing end of a match against China’s Saisai Zheng. She fell to Zheng in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The bottom four women’s seeds in action on the day all fell, including Misaki Doi, Coco Vandeweghe, Sara Errani and Puig. A bit further up, No. 21 Irina-Camelia Begu fell to Lesia Tsurenko.
