2016 US Open scores and bracket: Serena Williams and Andy Murray move on to 3rd round

Williams and Murray both breezed to victory at the US Open on Thursday.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Serena Williams made short work of her second round opponent at the US Open on Thursday. Williams downed unseeded Vania King in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Williams has struggled since winning Wimbledon prior to the Olympics, and she is defending a whole mess of points at the US Open.

This means that Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska all entered the tournament with the ability to take Williams’ No. 1 ranking away from her. Kerber won her match on Wednesday, Muguruza was eliminated, and Radwanska took to the court for her second-round match before Williams did on Thursday.

That match saw Radwanska best Naomi Broady in straight sets, 7-6(9), 6-3.

Andy Murray was also in action, and he made short work of unseeded Marcel Granollers. Murray is one of the favorites in the tournament, and it was crucial that he advance with little wear on his body. His top competition, Novak Djokovic, advanced to the third round via walkover on Wednesday. Murray bested Granollers in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

Serena’s sister, Venus Williams, had a much easier time with her second round opponent than her first. She was pushed to three sets in her opener but had little trouble with Julia Goerges on Wednesday, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Venus struggled big time at the Olympics, losing in her opening singles match and also in her doubles match with Serena.

Kei Nishikori, the sixth seed, and Dominic Thiem, the eighth seed, were also both victorious for the men. Nishikori was pushed to four sets in his match, but Thiem downed Ricardas Berankis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova, the fifth and 10th seeds for the women, also won their second round matches in straight sets on Thursday.
