The quarterfinals of the 2016 US Open got underway on Tuesday and the action was solid, though there were no surprises. Novak Djokovic, the top seed for the men, advanced to the semifinals after downing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the ninth seed. Djokovic took the first two sets, 6-3, 6-2, before Tsonga retired from the match with injury.

That makes two matches Djokovic has played at the US Open where his opponent has retired early, and he had a walkover with a match that never even started on top of that.
Angelique Kerber, the second seed, has been nothing short of brilliant throughout the tournament and she barely broke a sweat in her victory over Roberta Vinci, the tournament’s seventh seed. Kerber bested Vinci in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
Caroline Wozniacki, a former No. 1 player who is unseeded for this tournament, continued her very strong play and punched her ticket to the semifinals with a dominant win over Anastasija Sevastova, 6-0, 6-2. That means Kerber and Wozniacki will clash in one semifinal, while the other is to be decided on Wednesday.
Gael Monfils, the 10th seed for the men, ended the surprising run of Lucas Pouille, the No. 24 seed. Pouille bested Rafael Nadal, the fourth seed, in an incredible five-set match that ended in a tiebreaker in the Round of 16. But Monfils needed just three sets to take down Pouille, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
This means Monfils will meet Djokovic in the first men’s semifinal match. Monfils and Djokovic have played each other 12 times as professionals since their first meeting at the US Open in 2005, but none have ended in favor of Monfils. Djokovic has won every match between the two, including their lone meeting in 2016 on the hard courts of the Canada Masters.
The other half of the men’s and women’s quarterfinals will conclude on Wednesday.

The quarterfinals will continue as Serena Williams takes on Simona Halep on the women’s side, while Andy Murray faces Kei Nishikori for the men. But keep an eye on Juan Martin del Potro, the unseeded Argentine who will be facing Stan Wawrinka, the third seed. Del Potro won the US Open in 2009.
On Wednesday, play begins at 12 p.m. ET. Television coverage of the day will be handled by ESPN from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and then ESPN2 from 7 p.m. through 11 p.m. Live streams will be available online at WatchESPN.
