2016 US Open scores and bracket: Andy Murray loses to Kei Nishikori in quarterfinals

Andy Murray is out of the US Open, suffering an upset in the quarterfinals against Kei Nishikori. Murray, the second seed, went into Wednesday’s quarterfinal match with Nishikori, the sixth seed, owning a 7-1 record against him. The last time Nishikori won was in the ATP World Tour Finals back in 2014, but he pushed the Brit to five sets on Wednesday and ultimately will be advancing to the semifinals.

The match lasted just under four hours and went for five sets, with both Murray and Nishikori taking dominant wins in specific sets. Murray took the first one at 6-1, Nishikori the second at 6-4, Murray the third at 6-4 and Nishikori the fourth at 6-1. The fifth and final set saw Nishikori score an early break, but Murray himself managed a break to tie things up.

Tied at 5-5 with Murray serving, Nishikori scored another break and was suddenly serving for the match. Ultimately, he won that game and won the match, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Nishikori has historically played his best tennis at the US Open, advancing to the finals in 2014, further than he’s gone in any of the other Grand Slam events. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year, but this semifinal spot will be his best showing of 2016 yet.

As for who he’ll meet in the semifinals, that is still to be decided. Third seed Stan Wawrinka will be taking on the unseeded but surging Juan Martin Del Potro in the other quarterfinal to decide who will advance. It’s worth noting that Del Potro has been here before, winning the US Open back in 2009. He’s playing some of the best tennis of his career and would be a handful for Nishikori.

Murray was fresh off winning his second Olympic gold medal after besting Del Potro in the finals at Rio. He was considered the top competition for Novak Djokovic, the top seed, but now he’ll be watching the rest of the tournament like the rest of us on the sidelines.

One half of the men’s semifinals was already set on Tuesday, as Djokovic will be facing Gael Monfils, the 10th seed in the tournament. The Wawrinka vs. Del Potro match will take place on Wednesday evening.
