UEFA Europa League recap: Lyon wins a thriller, Spurs concede late in draw

Lyon and Hapoel Kiryat Shmona had the match of the day so far as the French side blew a two goal lead, only to find the winner in stoppage time. Spurs conceded late against Panathinaikos for a disappointing draw in Greece and Genk blew a 2-goal lead against Basel, settling for a draw.

Here’s a wrap-up of all the mid-day action in the Europa League.

Group G

FC Basel 2-2 Racing Genk

Genk went ahead 2-0 in the first half thanks to goals from Benjamin De Ceulaer and Jelle Vossen, Basel pulled a goal back in the 69th minute thanks to a penalty that was finished by Marco Streller, and he completed the comeback with his second goal of the day in the 83rd minute. The draw is enough to keep Genk in first place in the group.

Videoton FC Fehervar 3-0 Sporting Lisbon

Videoton took advantage of a shockingly poor Sporting Lisbon side, hammering the Portuguese club 3-0. Videoton did all their damage in the first half with goals from Paulo Vinicius, Filipe Oliveira, and Nermanja Nikolic. The victory moves Videoton from last place after the first match day to second place.

Group I

Hapoel Kiryat Shmona 3-4 Lyon

Hapoel took the lead in the 8th minute thanks to Shimon Abuhazira, but goals from Gueida Fofana, Fabian Monzon and Anthony Reveillere had the visitors Lyon up 3-1 at the half. Hapoel fought back in the second half with a goal from Lior Levi in the 50th minute and got the equalizer thanks to a penalty scored by Abuhazira, his second of the match. It was Lyon who got the last laugh, cruelly stealing away full points thanks to a 93rd minute goal from Yassine Benzia.

Sparta Prague 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Bilbao’s tough start to the season continued with a 3-1 blowout loss to Sparta Prague. Goals from Tomas Zapotocny, Bekim Balaj, and a PK by Josef Husbauer did the damage for Sparta. Oscar de Marcos got a late consolation goal for Bilbao.

Group J

Lazio 1-0 NK Maribor

Lazio knocked off the group leaders (though no one expected them to stay there) Maribor in Rome thanks to a second half strike from Ederson. It should have been 2-0 after Jovan Vidovic was sent off for a bad challenge in the box, giving Lazio a penalty. Hernanes missed the penalty, but Maribor were unable to claw back for a point. Lazio takes over first place in the group with the win.

Panathinaikos 1-1 Tottenham

Spurs looked on their way to a road victory over the Greek club Panathinaikos. A 35th minute goal from Michael Dawson but Spurs in the lead, but the Trifylli equalized though in the 76th minute thanks to Jose Toche, rescuing a point for the home side. Spurs drop to third in the group while Panathinaikos remains at the bottom.

Group K

FC Metalist Kharkiv 2-0 Rapid Vienna

Goals from Edmar Aparesida and Ribeiro were all Metalist needed to get a 2-0 victory over Rapid Vienna. Rapid’s Guido Burgstaller was sent off in stoppage time, a result of his side’s frustration over their poor performance. Metalist stays at the top of Group K, even on points with Leverkusen.

Rosenborg 0-1 Bayern Leverkusen

Stefan Kiessling’s goal in the 75th minute stole the full three points on the road for Leverkusen. The win allows the German side to keep pace with Metalist at the top of their group with four points. Rosenborg drops to third.

Group L

Hanover 96 2-1 Levante

Hannover lost Karim Haggui in the 9th minute to a straight red card and conceded the subsequent penalty as Michel scored to give Levante an early 1-0 lead. The Germans fought back though, equalizing with their own penalty, scored by Sszabolcs Huszti in the 20th minute. Dider Ya Konan scored early in the second half and Hannover held on to get a full three points. The win moves Hannover to the top of the group.

Helsingborg 2-2 Twente Enschede

Helsingborg had a comfortable 2 goal lead at half time thanks to a brace from Nikola Djurdjic, but Twente fought back in the second half to earn a draw. Goals from Rasmus Bengtsson and Douglas Franco brought the Danish side back.
