UEFA Europa League recap: Liverpool fall at home to Udinese, Newcastle drills Bordeaux

It was a wild set of late matches in the Europa League. Lots of comebacks and late goals, punctuated by Udinese’s second half surge to defeat Liverpool at Anfield. Atlético Madrid stunned Viktoria Plzen late, Marseille destroyed AEL, Newcastle beat up Bordeaux and PSV took advantage of weak Napoli side.

Here’s the final results from today’s late Europa League action:

Group A

Liverpool 2-3 Udinese

After controlling the first half and going to the locker room thanks to a Jonjo Shelvey goal in the 23rd minute, it all went wrong in the second half for Liverpool. Udinese’s Antonio Di Natale smoothly beat Pepe Reina seconds in to the half and then setup Giovanni Pasquale’s match winner in the 71st minute. Sebastián Coates added to Udinese’s goal total with a brutal own goal as well. Luis Suarez’s 75th minute goal closed the gap, but the Reds couldn’t finish the comeback.

Group B

Académica de Coimbra 1-1 Hapoel Tel-Aviv

Académica appeared to be on their way to a big win over Isreali side Hapoel Tel-Aviv, leading the match in to stoppage time thanks to a 46th minute goal from Salim Cisse. It wasn’t to be though as Omer Damari rescued a point for Hapoel with a 93rd minute strike.

Atlético Madrid 1-0 Viktoria Plzen

It took 93 minutes but Atlético Madrid found a match winner over Plzen thanks to a last second goal from Cristian Rodriguez. The win puts Atlético in great shape at the top of the group with six points, three clear of Plzen.

Group C

Borussia Monchengladbach 2-4 Fenerbahce

Monchengladbach scored first thanks to Luuk de Jong in the 17th minute, but then proceeded to conceded three goals as Baroni Cristian, Raul Miereles and Dirk Kuyt scored for Fenerbahce. Igor De Camargo pulled Monchengladbach back within one in the 73rd minute, but Cristian’s second goal of the match iced the victory for the Turkish side.

Marseille 5-1 AEL

22-year old new signing Lucas Mendes was superb in his debut, scoring assisting on Rod Fanni’s opening goal and scoring the second as the French side rolled past AEL. Loic Remy added a third in the 76th minute and Andre Pierre Gignac got in on the fun in the 89th minute. Not to be out done, Remy scored again in the 93rd minute...just for fun obviously.

Group D

Club Brugge 2-0 Martimo

Goal from Carlos Bacca and Bjorn Vleminckx gave Brugge a home victory over Martimo. The win allows Brugge to keep pace with Newcastle and Bordeaux at the top of the group.

Newcastle United 3-0 Bordeaux

The Magpies hammered French side Bordeaux 3-0 at the Sports Direct Arena. Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse scored for Newcastle, while Bordeaux defender Henrique was kind enough to score an own goal as well. Newcastle now sits in first place in the group with four points.

Group E

Modle 2-0 VfB Stuttgart

Second half goals from Jo Inge Berget and Daniel Chukwa propelled Modle past Stuttgart.

Steaua Bucuresti 1-0 FC Copenhagen

Steaua snatched victory from the jaws of a draw thanks to an 83rd minute goal by Stefan Nikolic. No doubt their less than reputable owner Gigi Becali will be thrilled with the win and the fact his team is on top of the group...for now.

Group F

AIK 2-3 Dnipro

Like two heavyweight lightweight fighters, AIK and Dnipro traded punches in the form of goals throughout the game, but it was Dnipro who hit the hay-maker at the end. Helgi Danielsson opened the scoring in the 4th minute for AIK. Dnipro’s Nikola Kalinic equalized in the 40th, but Henok Goitom put AIK back in front right before halftime. Dnipro scored twice in the second half with Vitaliy Mandziuk getting the equalizer and Yevhen Seleznyov netting the match winner in the 83rd minute. The surprising result is Dnipro is atop Group F.

PSV Eindhoven 3-0 Napoli

Napoli rolled out a lineup of mostly reserve players and it showed in a 3-0 whooping at the hands of PSV. Jeremain Lens, Dries Mertens scored in the first half and Marcelo netted in the second half for the Dutch club.
