Sounders have already sold 66,000 seats for clash with Timbers

The game will likely go down in history as the highest attended non-doubleheader in MLS since the inaugural season.

Those wacky Seattle Sounders fans are at it again. This time, more than 66,000 of them have already obtained tickets to see the Sounders take on the Portland Timbers in a Cascadia Cup showdown. That's already more people than have ever watched a MLS game in Seattle and it's approaching the largest crowd to ever watch a soccer match in the Pacific Northwest, which was 67,052 for last year's friendly against Manchester United.

Capacity for CenturyLink Field is only a shade over 67,000, so it's unlikely the Sounders will set a new MLS record for a non-doubleheader. As it currently sits, the record is 69,255 that reportedly saw the LA Galaxy host the NY/NJ MetroStars at the Rose Bowl during the inaugural MLS weekend in 1996. Either way, this is destined to become the largest crowd just to see two MLS teams play in nearly 17 years.

Unlike that game, though, there’s nothing particularly special about this one. Just two long-time hated rivals squaring off with nothing more than regional bragging rights on the line
