It hasn’t been talked about as much as it probably should, but this is the centennial celebration of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This week, the 16 U.S.-based MLS teams enter the tournament in the third round. Last year, this was the point in the tournament that featured a whole host of upsets, with lower-division teams upsetting some MLS clubs.
Real Salt Lake provides funny, and good, explanation of U.S. Open Cup
There’s no shame in explaining why the U.S. Open Cup deserves to be important to MLS fans.
I’d like to think that we’ve now moved beyond the stage of needing to educate fans about what, exactly, this tournament is and what it represents, but I’d also like to think that we no longer have to explain the offside rule, either.
Luckily, Real Salt Lake was more than happy to provide this lesson. It's actually a really good roundup of the tournament, touches on many of the key points, has some fun along the way and somehow manages to get all the way through without comparing it to England's FA Cup. Definitely worth a view and probably worth sharing with anyone who is still confused by the closest the longest continually awarded trophy in U.S. history.
