Fidel Castro wrote to Diego Maradona to prove he’s not dead

Fidel Castro is alive and there is one person in the world who can prove it: Diego Maradona.

Cuba’s former leader has been dogged by rumors of his death. The 88-year-old has not been seen or heard from for months and people had begun to wonder if he passed, so Castro decided to write a letter to prove he was still alive. And, with a rolodex of pretty much every person in the world to choose from, Castro chose to send that letter to Maradona.

It makes sense that Maradona would somehow end up central to this story, mainly because Maradona manages to find himself in all of the weirdest stories. It’s part of his charm, or whatever Maradona has that is his version of charm.

The state-run network Telesur reported that Maradona got the letter, but there were no photos of Castro inside. Castro asn’t been photographed since August and had not been heard from since writing an editorial in October. He has not been seen in public for more than a year.

It’s understandable why some may have questioned whether Castro had died. Figures like him don’t often go months without any public profile, but his health issues are well-documented. They forced him to step down as president, which was shocking. Almost as shocking as choosing Maradona to prove he is still alive.
