A’ja Wilson got a message from Blake Griffin after being drafted No. 1, and every part of her reaction was perfect

The emotions!

A’ja Wilson was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday evening. Wilson was the clear-cut favorite to be picked first in this draft as a 6’5 center with some of the best low-post scoring and rebounding we have ever seen.

But her personality off the court is also top draft pick worthy. After being selected No. 1, Wilson was given a surprise video by her longtime favorite player, Blake Griffin. The video was obviously great, but her reaction was even better.

Wilson said to SB Nation at the draft, “Everyone knows how I feel about Blake Griffin. He’s my No. 1 guy. I love the way her carries himself, I love his game. To see this video with him, that’s just amazing.”

We broke down our favorite parts of the video

Eric Stephen: This video builds like a crescendo, from the stunned look on Wilson’s face as she watches the first time, leading into her talking with Griffin even though it is a recording.

Whitney Medworth: Wilson’s commentary throughout the video is just perfect. The second time she watches it back, she starts responding to Griffin: “Hey! Thank you!” Then after she has watched a second time, she says “OK. How do I get this video?”

Whitney McIntosh: Most of Wilson’s reaction in this is awesome. Her eyelids flutter, she has a long, drawn out “Oh. My. Goodness. Whaaaat?!” the first time she watches, and her mouth is agape as she takes it in. But my favorite part is once her initial shock is over and she’s done watching the first time, and she asks to watch it one more time. “I gotta watch it one more time. One more time. ” Then in quick succession “One more time. One more time. One mo ... I’m sorry. I just need one more time.” As if someone will prevent her from watching it again if she wastes any time restarting the video. It’s so pure and she’s so astonished, I love it.

Hector Diaz: Every time I watch this, I have a new favorite moment. But I think right now, my favorite part is the brief second between when she puts down the iPad and looks at someone off camera. It’s that moment when she fully absorbs everything that has just happened. She just got drafted No.1 and her favorite player just congratulated her? That look is the textbook definition of ‘Get outta here!’ It’s peak disbelief. It’s wonderful.
