Roy Miller, yes THAT Roy Miller, provided the game-winner for Costa Rica as they beat Honduras 1-0 in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Friday. Miller, who moonlights as a much-maligned New York Red Bulls defender, got his goal in the 25th minute when he awkwardly headed in a rebound off a free kick.

With the win, Costa Rica moved into a three-way tie for first place at seven points. Mexico and the United States also have seven points. Technically, Los Ticos are leading the Hexagonal, as their +2 goal difference is one goal better than the U.S. and Mexico.
Although the win may not have been particularly improbable, who the goal came from was. In 37 previous national team appearances, Miller had never scored a goal. In fact, he hadn’t scored during his previous three seasons with the Red Bulls or for any other club team since at least 2008. Rather, he’s probably best known for his many gaffes including earlier this year when he admitted to purposefully encroaching on a penalty that ended up costing his team a goal.
Costa Rica and their new hero will next face their biggest test of the Hexagonal, as they visit Mexico on Tuesday.
Honduras, meanwhile, was once considered the up-and-coming team in the region and now finds themselves with four points in four matches. They will host Jamaica on Tuesday in an absolute must-win match.
