WrestleMania 33 results: AJ Styles defeats Shane McMahon in wild match

Shane pulled out everything in his arsenal, but he still succumbed to the phenomenal AJ Styles.

AJ Styles wanted an opponent for WrestleMania 33, and SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon offered himself up after Styles attacked him multiple times. Following a wild match that included some eye-opening spots, Styles eventually put away Shane for his first win at WrestleMania.

On the go-home SmackDown episode, Styles made it a point to emphasize that this would be a regular wrestling match. Indeed, they started off with a classic chain-wrestling sequence, and Shane used a series of arm drags before Styles went outside for a breather.

AJ got back in the ring and Shane started laying in his punches in the corner. But Styles recovered and nailed Shane with a dropkick through the ropes, knocking him over the announce table. Styles followed that up with some stiff strikes and kicks in the middle of the ring.

Styles went for the springboard forearm early, but Shane countered by knocking him off the rope. Shane then came back with some more punches and used a Samoan drop to get a two count. Styles recovered and hit a nasty-looking neckbreaker onto his own knee, sending Shane to the mat in a daze. AJ then locked in the Calf Crusher, which Shane countered into an armbar. Styles escaped and hit a shoulder block on Shane, leaving both men laying down in the ring.

Styles tried the springboard 450, but Shane caught him in a triangle choke. AJ reversed that into a Styles Clash, only for Shane to kick out. The two men continued to trade moves before a Styles kick knocked out the referee.

With the ref down, Styles pulled some trash cans out and set one up on Shane, who was laying in a corner. Styles went up for Shane’s own move, the Coast to Coast dropkick, but Shane caught him with the can in midair. Shane got a trash can of his own and placed it on Styles, then hit the Coast to Coast properly. He covered Styles, who barely kicked out when the dazed referee made a slow count.

Shane cleared an announce table and laid out Styles on top of it. He climbed to the top rope and prepared to hit an elbow drop, but Styles got out of the way, leaving Shane to crash and burn through the table. Shane recovered and countered a Phenomenal Forearm into a DDT before missing a Shooting Star Press just as AJ rolled out of the way. One more Phenomenal Forearm was enough for Styles to finally get the victory.
