33 year-old Choi Yoi-sam won his last fight as a boxer, something many boxers don’t get the luxury of doing. Sadly, he also didn’t have a choice in the matter: Choi collapsed after his bout last week with Ko Seung-kwan in the WBA Flyweight division and never woke up after. He was knocked down in the twelfth round but got up to finish the fight and successfully defend his flyweight title.

Doctors pronounced Choi brain dead yesterday. His family said his organs will be donated.
The fight was rough, and Choi did suffer a number of hard blows to the head. But the truth about boxing fatalities is more complex than most observers think: when boxing fatalities do occur, they often involve pre-existing conditions exacerbated by the harsh trauma of a fight such as an undiagnosed brain hemorrhage.↵
