Fired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz has already had contact with...the Southern Methodist University Mustangs? After firing Phil Bennett, the Mustangs have talked with everyone from June Jones to Terry Bowden to Paul Johnson, but Martz’s name might be the strangest I’ve heard yet: no head coaching experience at the college level, not a whole lot of momentum coming from his stint in Detroit, and no traditional ties to Dallas or even the state of Texas.

Martz’s last college coaching experience was in 1991 as the offensive coordinator for the Arizona State Devils, but he did coach for 17 years at the college level before making the leap to the pros, so the hire wouldn’t be totally crazypants for SMU. Whether Martz would accept a role as a college coach for a significant length of time is a better question to ask, since he’s been in the pros for 15 years now and doesn’t seem like the typical rah-rah college coach.↵
Mike Martz to...SMU?
