FirstCuts: This Ain’t Your Daddy’s ‘Karate Kid’

By David “Large” Larzelere
Sports don’t start and end with a referee’s whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from games to gear.
So I’m watching Sportscenter last night and working on some TV crap, and the next thing I know I see a trailer for ... well, The Karate Kid. Only now Mr. Miyagi is a big black dude (who I think is a famous underwear model) with some kind of accent, Elisabeth Shue is Amber Heard, and the evil bully dude is ... he’s pretty much the same dude.
Ralph Macchiao is almost the same too, a little bigger, more muscular. The main difference between Karate Kid and (ahem) Never Back Down -- maybe the ONLY difference really -- is that these new fangled rich boys don’t do no wax-on paint-the-fence karate type fightin’. No, this here is, and I quote, “a heart-pounding look at the dangerous underground world of mixed martial arts.”

After this, you have to wonder how long it will be before MMA gets the Will Ferrell treatment.↵
