This should surprise no sports fan who has felt the icy hand of the reaper on their shoulder during matches, but having the data to back it up should make you feel a little better about saying things like “I thought I was going to die” in reference to a moment in a sporting event. Chances are, you may have been more right than you knew.
After studying the effects of matches during the 2006 World Cup, they concluded that, for German men, the risk of having a heart attack or some other serious heart problem was more than three times higher on days when their team played. It was 82 percent higher for German women.
If true for other sports, it makes the survival rate of Phoenix Cardinals fans a definite topic of study for further research.↵
