Media Enjoys Giving Nicknames to Athletic Acts

By Chris Mottram
After the Super Bowl, there was some blabbering amongst the talking heads about what the nickname for the Eli-to-Tyree play should be, probably because ESPN et al needed something to talk about. (With Leather did the media a favor and officially ended the discussion by simply calling it “The Play,” which was fine with me because who the hell cares, really?)

Well now, they’re back at it again. Their latest debate is over what to call Dwight Howard’s “Superman Dunk” from Saturday night. Apparently, “Superman Dunk” just won’t cut it for these media types, although I have no idea why.
Anyway, Mike and Mike (otherwise known as Fat Stupid Guy and Skinny Smarmy Guy) got in on the act this morning, and boy did they have some zingers! Their brilliant ideas:
-- “The Flunk,” because he flung it down
-- “The Slunk,” because he slung it down
-- “The Thunk,” because he threw it down
-- “Crypdunkite,” because the Fat Guy is stupid
They actually suggested these to Howard himself, who responded by basically just saying that he’s gonna stick with “The Superman Dunk.” Wise choice.
But the fun didn’t stop there. Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins had to throw in his two cents to the Orlando Sentinel. Although, granted, his idea was slightly more advanced than any of Mike and Mike’s: “The Supersonic Death Defying, Lead Flying, Underdog Dunk.” Better, but still obnoxious.
Dawkins also had names for Howard’s other dunks, which included the “The Tap and Trap Dunk” and “The Walk Away From Love.”
