Those Wishing to Embarrass ESPN Are ‘Weasels’

By Chris Mottram
Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson (Yep, this guy) is ready to fight the good fight. No, no, not the fight against ESPN. The fight against the internet and anyone who would dare wish to make fun of the Worldwide Leader’s personalities.

In a column today, Jackson says that bloggers (although he would never use that word because that might somehow -- god forbid -- validate us) have “crossed the line†by posting content such as the Berman videos and the (two-year-old) Scott Van Pelt phone call in an attempt to “embarrass†the four-letter-word’s finest.
Though sportscasters ultimately must take responsibility for how they present themselves, any contempt in the Berman/Van Pelt incidents should be reserved for the weasels who placed the clips on the Internet.
First off, you are defending Chris Berman, who represents all that is wrong and soulless in sports media today. Seriously, that’s like taking Lumbergh’s side in a dispute between him and Peter.
Second, Berman is the one – with a camera knowingly on him – who openly cussed out his crew, talked about smuggling drugs in from Canada, tried to swoon a (un)lucky lady or two, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, yet the people posting the videos are the weasels? I can’t even begin to attempt to wrap my head around the logic there.
Third, I know blogs scare you to death. I’d be scared of them too, if I was you. Having your job is basically the equivalent of working in the engine room of the Titanic, minus the death part.
Fourth –- and this is really the crux of this post -– are you effing serious, man? Really, you’re not kidding with this column? Please tell me it was all satire so I won’t have to spend the next 48 hours worrying about the state of humanity.
Oh, also, Berman addresses the videos in Jackson’s column as well. I might have buried the lead a little here.
