ESPN Apologizes for Speedo Guy
Another extremely exciting weekend of college basketball was almost ruined by one guy in a Speedo. Well, that’s according to ESPN.
In the midst of its never ending hype of the UNC-Duke game this past Saturday night, the network showed clips of the original “Speedo Guy.” See, back in 2003 a clever Duke student disrobed down to a Speedo to distract UNC’s Jackie Manuel as he shot free throws. There was another in 2005, and unfortunately for the viewing public, yet another Saturday night.
The new “Speedo Guy” added a little extra to his performance though. It was a move first patented by the WWE wrestling troupe Degeneration-X and involves ... well, I’ll just show you:

Why his producers made Dan Shulman apologize afterwards is beyond me and seems like a tad bit of an overreaction, but they’re still trying to make amends today. ESPN senior coordinating producer Dan Steir said, “It was an unfortunate mistake. It shouldn’t have happened. We are sorry.”
Sunday Afternoon Hockey Is Actually Exciting:
Count me among the masses who think the NHL season is way too long (so is the NBA’s for that matter). I normally don’t pay attention until the playoffs, but I think that might have changed after this past Sunday’s Pens-Caps game.
Young stars Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby did not disappoint as they led their teams to a two-two tie deep into the third period. From the moment Crosby came onto the ice for his last shift, you could see that the Penguins weren’t playing for overtime. With about 30 seconds left, their pressure on the Capitals yielded an own-goal, which was followed by an empty netter for a final score of 4-2.
It’s still near the end of the season, but if you’d normally wait until the playoffs, you might want to check out the NHL on NBC. What else are you doing on Sunday at noon? Going to brunch? Please.
Quote of the Weekend:
“I don’t know what he’s talking about anymore.” - Jeff Van Gundy on booth partner Mark Jackson (I really don’t think they like each other)
