Seriously, I’m trying to bring some NCAA flavor to these posts, since that’s the basketball of choice in these months. So how about this bittersweet gem from the faltering halls of Chicago Bull-dom: Chris Duhon, feeling down and out, made an unexpected, unauthorized return to college ... to make himself feel something, anything, once again.
The latest Bull to run astray was fourth-year guard Chris Duhon, who did not play in Sunday’s 116-109 loss at Detroit after missing shootaround. Duhon chartered a private jet to attend Saturday’s Duke-North Carolina game, then overslept the next morning. “I just needed to get away and get myself back together,” Duhon said on WMVP. “I wanted to go to a place where I felt comfortable and be around people who can boost my self-esteem.”
This unrecognizable man would be Bulls interim coach Jim Boylan.
Duhon, a hard-worker who has provided the Bulls with some unexpected sparks over his time there, has been displaced by the demon Larry Hughes. He’s a free agent this summer, and it’s doubtful Chicago wants him back. The man is astray, lost, staring and blank walls in an empty room. So off he runs to Tobacco Road, where he’ll always be a god. Or at least a sex symbol.
I guess I have no problem with this. Team rules and regulation are overrated, and at least this has more reasoning behind it than Tyrus Thomas’s enigmatic “see you Thursday.” But come on dude, get on with your life. You’ll get a contract somewhere else in the league, and they will play you. Worst case scenario, you suffer through a career of quiet, Eric Snow-like dignity. Running back to the site of your former glories, though? I’m sorry, but that’s like hanging out in the high school parking lot at age 20, or asking your mom to retire your jersey at Thanksgiving.
“See you Thursday” is how a real pro clears his head. Even if Thomas can’t yet fit into the league, he’s got the moral fiber of a man. Duhon, he’s just got that pampered Dookie pall hanging over him forever and ever. Elton Brand needs to start offering some seminars for his brethren.
