This Is Not Your Grandfather’s Davidson Team

By Will Brinson

Billy Packer said that when his Wake team lost to Davidson, he went and hid in the dorm for a few days. Besides the fact that his homerism is unnecessary, albeit not unexpected, one could imagine that JT3 and Roy Hibbert share the same sentiments after losing to the Wildcats 74-70. Fortunately for Hibbert, whose Georgetown career is now over, you can’t teach size, so he will end up being very rich.
Stephen Curry will also one day be rich, but for now he can probably enjoy the fact that his 30 point game - 20 in the second half - led another big Davidson comeback as the Wildcats advanced to the Sweet 16. Props to Jason Richards and his 20 points and five dimes too; were it not for he and Andrew Lovedale (11 points), the Wildcats would have folded far earlier. Of course, we can also try and think that the charming looks of Mrs. Curry (no offense, Dell) helped will the Wildcats to a win.

Elsewhere, Bruce Pearl continued to sweat. The Tennessee basketball team did it figuratively though, as they squeaked their way past Butler in overtime, 76-71. Now it looks like the favored mid-majors, i.e. Drake, Butler and Gonzaga, have gone the way of Sidney Lowe’s coaching career. (More on this later. The mid majors, not Lowe. He’s dead to me.)
And San Diego failed to comeback against Western Kentucky, saving the blogosphere from another afternoon of Anchorman quotes relating to the sex organs of female whales. This game at no point was shown on any televisions other than possibly in western portions of Kentucky and certain areas near San Diego.
Texas almost coughed up a comeback too, inexplicably allowing Miami to get within three points by the end of the game, mainly on Jack McClinton’s 18 points. The Longhorns held on though, because D.J. Augustin is really good at shooting free throws.
