Sometimes, strangers approach me on the street and ask “Hey Shoals, why the non-stop J.R. Smith love?” Well, here’s some tip-top evidence. Yes, I know it’s only a highlight. But think on the context: AI throwing the lob during a big Denver run, J.R. unafraid to embellish and prove something to the Mavs and team leader Iverson, all the Nuggers running around smiling afterward. He may be a problem child, but boy can he light up our lives.

I’ve spent a lot of time weighing the Durant/Horford R.O.Y. race. This kind of play shows how staggering potential can be put into use within the context of winning—instead of being left to mess around and find its own way. It’s insane, but also functional and helpful.↵
