Sadly, the AAFL Will Never Even Get to Play a Game

By Spencer Hall
The All-American Football League can join Firefly, the Republic of Kurdistan, and the pitching career of Jose Canseco in the category of big ideas with lifespans shorter than Bob Costas.

From Heisman winner to 3rd pick in a league that never happened.
According to Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, the problem came both in lack of interest and lack of money:
In reality, though, the idea sounded better than it actually was. Not surprisingly, the implementation of the league has proved to be too costly. Paying players and renting stadiums like The Swamp and Neyland Stadium are costly endeavors, especially when those stadiums would likely be mostly empty for games during the spring and summer.
Summer games at Florida Field did sound like a zesty variation on the third level of hell, but you must be saddened by the fact that the AAFL never even got to play a single game -- even the XFL made it that far, man.
Luckily, We’ll all only have the memories of their draft and its epic covert liveblog on Snarkastic to cherish as we watch Eric Crouch and Chris Leak desperately try to stave off real life for another year. Trust us, men: having done it for years now, it’s well worth the effort. Have you considered law school? It’s like a pro football career, but with delicious and utterly crippling student loan debt.
