Well, this is awkward. Tim McCarver, who was just a young boy when the Civil War broke out, explains to us that the Phillies manager – much like Southern Generals from 145 years ago – isn’t slow just because he’s from Virginia:↵
Pardon Me, Mr. McCarver, But How is Charlie Manuel Just Like a Civil War General?
↵
↵
↵As a Virginia native myself, I’d just like to say, “Um, thanks, Tim. I guess?” On one hand, it’s nice of him to point out that we aren’t stupid even if we speak slowly, plus, being able to kick ass is cool. On the other hand is, well, slavery. ↵
↵It should also be noted that Charlie Manuel is actually from West Virginia, a state that was created during the Civil War because of its opposition to the firm, Confederate beliefs of Virginia. Just so we’re clear: Being from W.V. does not, in any way whatsoever, make someone a Virginian. This is not a matter to be taken lightly in the Commonwealth.↵
