In Which ESPN Explains How Triple Plays Work

Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera turned the 14th unassisted triple play in MLB history yesterday (slightly more exciting than a balk, but not by much), but I’m still just so confused as to how exactly it happened. Little help, please,

↵↵Ohhh. Oh, oh, oh. Now it makes perfect sense. The baserunners must be running on the pitch (otherwise, the “unassisted” part is virtually impossible, which goes without saying), and there need to be no outs before the play in order to create the “perfect situation” for a triple play. Thanks Eric Young and company! You guys aren’t at all completely worthless and in need of being replaced by someone who knows about the game, like, say, Peter Gammons or Tim Kurkjian. Of course, neither of those guys played in the majors, so how could they possibly understand the intricacies of the game, like that fact that there must be no outs before the pitch in order to turn a triple play. ↵
