FirstCuts: Owen Schmitt On a Game Cover?

EA Sports presented itself with an interesting challenge by deciding to give each gaming platform a different cover boy for NCAA Football 09. Certainly, you can run the risk of not getting all the top-notch guys.↵↵So to review, we’ve got No. 3 pick Matt Ryan (PlayStation 3), No. 4 pick Darren McFadden (Xbox 360) and top vote-getting mascot Sparty (Wii) before today’s announcement. They also added DeSean Jackson, the No. 49 overall pick who was a big-time receiver at Cal, as the cover athlete for the PlayStation 2. So, that only left us with the PlayStation Portable.↵

↵↵Their choice? West Virginia fullback Owen Schmitt. That would be Schmitt, drafted at No. 163 in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks.↵

↵↵Now I’m not one to denigrate the fine career of the mohawked one from the WVU backfield, but if you were to ask me what video game cover he’d land on, I would’ve sooner guessed some sort of wrestling before any football title. Not that five touchdowns is a bad season, or that being a good blocker isn’t admirable, but what about Felix Jones, Rashard Mendenhall or Jonathan Stewart?↵

↵↵After the jump, check out what has to be the greatest Schmitt moment of all-time, as well as DeSean Jackson’s cover shot for the PlayStation 2↵
