Joe Calzaghe Postpones September Fight With Roy Jones; We’re Forced to Call B.S.

A hand injury to Joe Calzaghe has forced the postponement of his bout with Roy Jones previously scheduled for September 20th at Madison Square Garden. Reportedly he hurt his hand (or wrist, depending on who you read) while hitting the heavy bag and though there’s absolutely no way in hell that he can make the September date with Roy, the injury is not deemed to be career-threatening in any way.↵↵And my response to this is ... dah what? Have you looked at the calendar mate? Do you know when September 20th is? The bloody fight is bloody bleedin’ wankin’ two bloody months away! So you dinged your hand up on the big bag, sheesh, so what? Take a few days off and ice it! Larry Holmes fought Ken Norton for the heavyweight title in 1978 with a torn bicep muscle. I mean, I’m not suggesting that you fight at less than 100%, but really man, with two months to spare and some hand/wrist problems to cope with, I don’t know -- you might pull through just fine.↵

↵↵Honestly, something smells fishy to me in Wales on this one. The details of the injury are not forthcoming. The prospect of Calzaghe/Jones has been greeted with nothing but bad press here Stateside, while the eventual prospect of Calzaghe/Pavlik has been clamored for since the prospect was first discussed this past spring. Meanwhile, Roy, though nowhere near the fighter he once was, is in no way a walkover for the Pride of Wales. So I have to wonder -- is Team Calzaghe in the process of some risk reassessment here? Are they thinking maybe skip the appetizer and go straight to the main course? Both the Jones and Calzaghe camps are saying that the fight will be rescheduled for November. Myself, I won’t be surprised at all if those negotiations run into a snag. This just doesn’t feel right, this whole business. ↵
