The Anti-Yankees Suck Movement Begins

↵
↵A crusade has been launched today against the chanting of “Yankees Suck” during the Boston-New York series this weekend ... and beyond. But not by some sect of Yankee fans who are sick of being told the truth. No, this battle isn’t even being waged from New York. It’s Boston Globe’s Kevin Cullen who is calling for an end to “Yankees Suck” forever:↵↵⇥But, really, beyond being crude and moronic, the phrase “Yankees suck” is simply outdated. Its origins are from a bygone era, when we all knew deep down in our hearts that no matter how far ahead the Red Sox might have been in August, no matter the score and inning of a game in October, the Yankees were going to win. And there was nothing we could do about it.↵⇥↵⇥But that’s over. It’s been over since October 2004, when “Yankees suck” should have been put out to pasture.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥[…]↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥Now, sit back, and think long and hard for a moment. Have you ever said “Yankees suck”? Think of the people you have seen or heard saying this over the years. My experience has been that most people who shout “Yankees suck” are either drunk, obnoxious, or stupid and very often a combination of all three. They are an embarrassment to the rest of us, and their chant makes us look like a bunch of local yokels.↵⇥

↵↵

So, what Cullen is saying here is that now that the Yankees actually do suck – relative to the fact that they’ve been worse than the Red Sox in recent history – saying “Yankees Suck” is meaningless? Not that I’d attempt to justify this chant or argue that it ever really made sense or meant anything, but clearly it makes more sense now than it ever did before. Assuming they’re taking the term “suck” to mean “not good” or “worse than.” ↵↵And since when is there some group of Red Sox fans who don’t fall into at least one of the “drunk, obnoxious, or stupid” categories? It was actually my understanding that “Yankees suck” is just about the most eloquent, coherent thing one could hope to overhear at a Boston sporting event. ↵

↵↵Whatever, how about this: Both the Red Sox and Yankees suck. I think that’s the movement we can all really get behind.↵
