All around the webs today, the general consensus seems to be that Aaron Rodgers’ first start as the QB of the Packers last night was a resounding success (the word most commonly used seems to be “sharp”). That’s odd, because I thought he looked totally average, at best.↵

↵It was difficult to pay attention, what with Tony Kornheiser comparing Rodgers to Favre because they both have facial hair, but what I saw was a QB who missed several open receivers, including one man all alone down the sidelines for what would’ve been a certain six. The pass that actually resulted in his one touchdown was an amazing individual effort by James Jones on a poor throw from Rodgers (warning: turn volume down):↵

I won’t use the pick he threw against him, because much like how Rodgers can’t take the credit for Jones’ touchdown, he can’t be blamed for that interception – it bounced off the receiver’s chest. Overall, Rodgers was 9-15 for 117 yards with the one INT and one TD, a line that seems fine on paper, and really, it was (although without Jones’ amazing play, that line looks a lot worse). I’m not saying Rodgers isn’t going to be a successful QB, or that this was necessarily a bad first start for him. I’m just saying it was anything but “sharp.” Either way, it was still just a preseason game, so no one should get too up or down about the performance. One thing is for certain, though: He has a long way to go before Packer fans start considering him Divine.
