So Much For Tyson Gay -- UPDATE

↵
↵
↵It seems 90% of the track and field hype this summer has centered around Tyson Gay, the humble American sprinter who suffered injury last month but powered back to set up an Olympic battle in the 100 meters between the three fastest men of all-time. (Although I hear Jesus of Nazareth was like lightning on a rubber track.)
↵
↵The big three-way isn’t going to happen, though: Gay’s out after failing to qualify for the final. He finished 5th in his semifinal heat, two hundredths of a second behind fellow American Darvis Patton. Now Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell just have to worry about each other (theoretically).
↵
↵The men’s 100m will always be the marquee track event of the Olympics. It’s such an easy contest to grasp, even for 6-year-olds or simpletons (or 6-year-old simpletons): you run as fast as can for roughly 10 seconds. There is something very primal about the 100m, something which makes it imminently watchable. In that sense, losing the top American threat won’t harm the interest level. But some of the luster is certainly gone. I mean, all the Gay-Bolt jokes ... wasted!
↵
↵UPDATE: Usain Bolt wins gold, beating the world record while celebrating the last 20 meters in the process. Powell finished fifth.↵
