Joe Namath: Well Dressed In The Woods

Occasionally, we'll steal an extra special FirstCuts post or two for TSB consumption. This is one such post. Words by David Arnott.

↵“Hey there, gorgeous. My name’s Joe. What’s yours? Ain’t it a lovely day to stand next to a tree? Yeah, I see it’s sunny out. My scarf? I think it look just fine. I’m a superstar, you know.“↵↵Try a little thought experiment. Imagine what your favorite athlete looks like when he or she is chillaxin’ back home, totally out of the athlete mode. Most athletes are inextricably tied to their sports in the public mind, which may seem kind of obvious, but it’s one of those elements of celebrity that I imagine drives some people crazy, and is the source of athletes always talking about recording albums and acting and hosting morning television when they can.↵

↵↵This poster’s kind of incredible because even though Joe Namath looks vaguely ridiculous -- as we all did when we wore fashions from our youth -- he’s still instantly recognizable and recognizably in his element, even though there are no references to football whatsoever. This is Joe Namath the celebrity, no further explanation necessary. The image is a statement that Joe Namath can stand alone and be desirable even without football.↵
