The Football Gods Frown on Homer Announcers

From my couch, Kirk Herbstreit did a good job keeping his Buckeye nose clean in serving as an analyst during USC-Ohio State. Of course, without any sense of drama or competition, it’s easy to get detached.

↵Across the nation, Purdue product Bob Griese did color for a tight game between his Boilermakers and Oregon. Entering the fourth quarter of a tied game in West Lafayette, Griese did this (via Brahsome -- turn the sound down):

↵Yep, that’s Griese leading the crowd through a cheer and waving his Purdue flag. I don’t necessarily blame Griese, though. ESPN broadcasts plenty of Saturday games. Send the alum somewhere else! Griese isn’t like Erin Andrews or Herbstreit, who are part of ABC/ESPN’s A-team. If the biggest game is in Florida or Ohio State, you have to send your best broadcasters there. Griese is much lower on the totem pole. I think you can afford to stick Dave Pasch and Andre Ware on that game and let Griese implore a hostile Maryland crowd to “Shout.”

↵ESPN compounds the foolish decision by showing the foolishness on the live broadcast. I assume the producers knew the stunt was coming. Go to your sideline reporter! Kick it to a SportsCenter update! Don’t actively promote an embarrassing situation.

↵Of course, the Football Gods made their opinion known: as you see, Purdue fumbles on the next play (earning a “Good one, Griese” from the booth) and the Boilermakers lost in double overtime. Bet Bob doesn’t do that again.↵
