Laveranues Coles Needs a Big Hug

I don’t wanna get all Jeff Fisher on Laveranues Coles and alert the authorities or anything, but the Jets receiver seems a little down in the dumps. For starters, he seems to be the only person in New Jersey who is unhappy that Brett Favre, not Chad Pennington, is the Jets quarterback this season. Coles, who is BFFs with Pennington, had this to say last Friday leading up to the Patriots game:↵↵⇥“I don’t have a feel for him and he doesn’t have a feel for me,” Coles said yesterday of his on-field relationship with Favre. “That is one of the things I am going to have to deal with. In the past I’ve always known when the ball was coming. Now you don’t really know.”↵⇥↵⇥Coles still is fiercely protective of Pennington, with whom he still talks often.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥“Again, our relationship goes deeper than just football,” Coles said. “He’s happy, I’ll tell you that much. Any time you’re somewhere where you’re really wanted and people are excited about having you there ... He’s happy to be there and I’m happy for him.”↵⇥

↵↵

The lack of a relationship with Favre is to be expected after Coles missed the entire preseason. But based on those quotes, his unhappiness seems to go deeper, as if he’s taking the Pennington stuff personally. That last quote – “you’re somewhere where you’re really wanted and people are excited about having you there” – is some Grade A passive aggression that even our mothers would be jealous of. It seems to imply that Coles is angry with the organization for its treatment of Pennington. ↵↵But that isn’t the only sign that Coles is displeased. Despite the fact that he had 72-yards receiving yesterday, including a 54-yarder, he blamed the loss to the Pats on himself:↵

↵↵⇥“If you want anybody to blame, you can always put it on me,” Coles said. “I always take the blame for the team and step up front, and I had quite a few mistakes. I could have gotten us going. ... It falls on me.”↵↵Coles did have two drops in the game, but man, take it easy buddy. If any one person is to blame, it’s probably Favre for tossing up that costly interception. Between missing his bestest friend, being seemingly unhappy with the organization and blaming Sunday’s loss on himself … well, let’s just say that someone better make sure he takes his cell with him if he says he’s going out to watch some football tonight.↵
