Boston College A.D. Has Balls, But Unreal Expectations

It appears Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo will follow through on his threat to fire head football coach Jeff Jagodzinski for merely interviewing for the Jets head coach position. Once the threat was made, Jagodzinski couldn’t exactly back down -- never mind all reports that the coach wanted to be back in the NFL in any position, this is a head coaching job in New York! A dream come true for the truly masochistic.

↵The college coaching carousel isn’t my bag, but kudos (I think) to DeFilippo for taking a stand against the eternal upward ladder. Something about the lucrativeness of the coaching profession (in the BCS conferences, anyway) makes the bureaucrat-style constant job search a bit smelly. Schools aren’t saints, and too many coaches get fired too quickly. But most programs happily reward good coaches for providing continuity (with long deals or frequent enough pay raises), and few coaches rewards the schools with equal loyalty.

↵At the same time, the strive for better station is part of the very fabric of America. No stand from BC or any other school will change that. And in case DeFilippo doesn’t realize it, the NFL -- even a coordinator job -- is better than the ACC, in terms of money, lifestyle and building a resumé. Thumbs up for the resolve, DeFilippo. But I hope for your school’s sake it’s just for show.↵
