Troops in Iraq Can Imbibe During Super Bowl

There’s a ban on drinking alcohol inside combat zones for U.S. troops. While it’s hard for an outsider to disagree with said policy, I can imagine it is quite an annoyance for the young soldiers over in Iraq and Afghanistan. We Americans take our booze for granted -- wine with dinner, beer during a ballgame, whiskey for breakfast. Recreational drinking in part of most Americans’ life, and our dedicated troops go a long time (in theory) between gulps.

↵But here’s some good news for our friends and family in Iraq: soldiers can drink beer during the Super Bowl this year. ↵↵⇥American troops in Iraq will be allowed to drink beer without fear of court-martial for this year’s Super Bowl — an exception to a strict military ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones. In what is sure to be a major morale boost, the top U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. Raymond Odierno issued a waiver Wednesday paving the way for troops to participate in the popular American football tradition. [...]

↵⇥A copy of the waiver said the consumption of alcoholic beverages will be limited to Feb. 1-2 and service members can only have two, 12-ounce beers each.↵↵Many of us will be taking in more than two cold ones on Super Bowl Sunday, so let’s hope our friends have something good to put down.
