The Devils’ decision to cut Shanahan wasn’t easy, especially for Devils’ general manager Jacques Lemaire:
Devils’ GM Says it Was Hard to Cut Shanahan
For Lemaire, it was one of the most difficult days of his entire coaching career.
“I sat with him and Lou when Lou talked to him. After, I told Lou, ‘I can’t do this,’ " Lemaire said. "If I knew it would be like that, I don’t know if I’d have attended. It’s hard.
“It’s even worse for Lou because he drafted him. At 18 years old he played for him. It was hard for Lou. I could tell. I could tell just by his breathing after.”
Lemaire said the decision was made because management didn’t want Shanahan as a fourth line player. He also said Niclas Bergfors is an NHL player who is ahead of Shanahan at this point in their careers.
