The Eagles have released 39-year-old passer Jeff Garcia, and the rumor mills all have him as a player who will not be on the street for long. As we focus on fantasy here, we say he should go back to a place like Oakland, where he could probably get some playing time, and could be a viable fantasy contributor.
Go West, Jeff Garcia
In almost every fantasy league out there, there are are at least two or three teams with a shaky quarterback situation and as injuries mount, those situations worsen. Jeff Garcia is a proven commodity and even at his age, his experience translates into production. He has a career 62% completion percentage and 111 QB rating (both according to Pro Football Reference.)
But wait...there’s more. He spent a lot of time this summer with Oakland so he would be able to come in and run that offense on Day 1, and he won over a few key members of that locker room in the preseason if you believe reports out of Raiders camp in August. The Raiders also have a very nice running game that they commit themselves to and a defense that is good enough to keep them in games. Jeff Garcia’s accuracy would be a HUGE upgrade over JaMarcus Russell’s 41.3% completion percentage so far this season.
Bottom line: if Jeff Garcia heads to Oakland, pick him up off the waiver wire and prepare to start him. You might even consider taking a chance on picking up or trading for Darrius Heyward-Bey (with only one catch so far, he is most likely on your waiver wire.) I say that because if Al Davis swallows his pride and throws in the towel on the “force JaMarcus Russell onto the field” strategy, he is going to sure as hell make Jeff Garcia targets Hey-Bey in a “force the ball to Hey-Bey” strategy. Al Davis would hate to have TWO useless first-rounders on his bench.
