No. 25 South Carolina 28, Kentucky 26: Gamecocks Escape In Final Minutes
Columbia, SC (Sports Network) – Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes and scored once on the ground, as 25th-ranked South Carolina held on for a 28-26 victory over Kentucky at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Gamecocks (5-1, 2-1 SEC) needed to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter to preserve their fourth straight win. South Carolina’s lone loss this season came in a 41-37 shootout at Georgia on September 12.
Garcia completed 16-of-23 passes for 233 yards with an interception. His three TD tosses went to Alshon Jeffery, who finished with seven catches overall for 138 yards as South Carolina won its 10th straight over Kentucky.
Kentucky (2-3, 0-3) has lost three straight games, all to ranked conference opponents, but the Wildcats have been closer in each outing. After a 41-7 loss to top-ranked Florida on September 26, Kentucky dropped a 38-20 decision to No. 3 Alabama last week prior to this week’s two-point setback.
Derrick Locke ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in defeat, while adding four receptions for 20 yards. Randall Cobb also ran for 89 yards and a score on 13 carries and hauled in a touchdown pass for the Wildcats, who lost quarterback Mike Hartline to a sprained knee in the second half.
Hartline completed 9-of-14 passes for 139 yards with a touchdown before leaving. Will Fidler took over, although the Wildcats ran numerous plays with a direct snap to the running backs, and connected on just 2-of-8 throws for 16 yards.
