Sherdog brings the news that Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has a new deal:
“King Mo” Lawal Signs Strikeforce Deal
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce and could make his promotional debut as early as December, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
While the new trend across the community is to question how good Mo truly is based on the opponents on his record there is no doubt that he possesses the personality and (on paper) the skills to be a major player for Strikeforce. Lawal has been the subject of rumors for months involving a pending deal with DREAM, Strikeforce and even the UFC.
The big question, of course, is who does he fight? Guys like Mike Whitehead, Kevin Randleman, and Bobby Southworth would provide quality fodder for Mo’s rise. If all goes well, Mo would eventually fight former champ Renato Sobral and current champ Gegard Mousasi.
That’s the real problem here. 205 outside of the UFC is a bit of a wasteland; being mainly Gegard Mousasi and everyone else. A win over Kevin Randleman is only marginally better than his win over Mark Kerr while a win over Mike Whitehead would be nice it does nothing for Mo’s name recognition. Then again, were he to have jumped to the UFC it would have been hard to not move him up the ladder too quickly with the depth of their light heavyweight roster.
