The Red River Shootout (also known as the Red River Rivalry, if you’re Brent Musberger) annually delivers a clash of the two best teams in the Big 12, a meeting of five-star recruits turned pro prospects with points galore and BCS aspirations on the line.Today, simple sustained respiration might be enough.

In their first half, Oklahoma and Texas combined for more turnovers than scoring drives, 13 penalties for 134 yards, ten punts, and some of the ugliest football this side of the Big Ten. And they’re basically trading errors at this point. Oklahoma has -15 rushing yards; Colt McCoy is 10 of 21 for just 59 yards. Dominique Franks inexplicably fielded a punt a foot from the sideline and immediately muffed it; McCoy fumbled on a run to within OU’s 10.

Did I mention that Sam Bradford is out after reinjuring his shoulder just eight plays into the first quarter?

Neither of the teams on the field in the first half deserves to win the Big East, much less earn the Big 12’s BCS berth. Hopefully the play will pick up in the latter stages.
