When Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal in the shootout against the Nashville Predators, the Capitals fans celebrated by throwing their hats out onto the ice. This made sense due to the fact that it was Ovechkin’s third goal of the game, he scored two in regulation. Except for the fact that shootout goals don’t actually count for anything.

↵↵Ovechkin had the Capitals’ two goals in regulation, and when he scored, the fans littered the ice with hats, mistakenly thinking it was a hat trick. Play was halted for about two minutes while the hats were collected from the ice.

↵“Find out if anyone has ever thrown hats for a goal that doesn’t count as a hat trick,” Boudreau said.

↵↵Capitals fans have the chance to be pioneers with this one.
