Madden 27 review: A must-buy

This year’s game is so, so good.

The most common refrain when met with the yearly release of Madden NFL is “it’s the same as last year.” This is never true; there’s always something that EA Sports has worked on to improve the series, but the sentiment is more locked in disappointment that nothing meaningful has changed — at least in the eyes of some gamers. If you were to trot out that “it’s the same” phrase about Madden 27, then you’re either lying or you’ve got an ax to grind, because Madden 27 is one of the most ambitious, innovative, and fun entries in Madden history, and easily the best of this generation.

A number of changes to the core gameplay experience has streamlined the act of playing the game itself. All the pre-snap adjustments still exist, allowing you to make whatever changes you prefer to make to base defenses — but that system has been vastly simplified for players who don’t enjoy entering a Konami-code of line and coverage adjustments to play the game. Now your head coach will chime in with audible suggestions or alignment changes that better counter the offense, while also explaining his rationale behind the switch, which is a great addition for people learning about football on a deeper level. This might involve pinching the interior linemen to stop the run, spying the QB with a linebacker if they’re mobile and likely to scramble, while on offense where are similar improvements lead to run plays being flipped, route changes to get behind aggressive defenses can lead to big plays against the blitz, but only if you get the ball out on time.

This dovetails into the big gameplay change of Madden 27 with timing-based catches. When the ball is in the air there is now a timing meter that can be used to have more control over the receiving game. You don’t need to use the timing-based catching, but adding it to your repertoire makes a mammoth difference in how passing plays unfold. A well-timed catch can lead to a receiver skying over a defensive back to high point the ball and make a contested reception, or receiving the ball in-stride to generate more YAC. It offers more control over the offense in a way that hasn’t existed in the past — and when this is combined with the overhauled running game seen in Madden 26 it really makes offense feel good.

One area that has also seen significant improvement is the player AI. This had been improving in recent years, but now feels like they’ve hit on something really special. NFL players truly play like their real-world counterparts. In one game against the Buccaneers I was able to pressure Baker Mayfield early and often, leading to him forcing the ball downfield out of frustration and trying to squeeze the ball into tighter windows, even in double coverage. Meanwhile it’s near impossible to sack Caleb Williams in the pocket as he dances away from pressure, but like Caleb actually plays, he will hold onto the ball too long outside of the pocket looking for a big play, allowing the defense to force a bad throw with pressure.

There are more quality-of-life changes on both sides of the ball that make the act of playing the game more engaging. The best changes from College Football 27 have been brought forward once more, along with one of my favorite changes this year: Dynamic weather. This ensures that weather simply isn’t a binary feature of rain on/off, and now you can either see bad weather roll in over the course of a game with rain beginning, or a messy start give way to the sun coming out and the field drying out. It’s a small change that makes the entire game feel more real and lived in.

Presentation is where this year’s iteration of Madden really shines. Last year took strides with introductions, but these are even better in Madden 27, complete with Jaguars’ mascot Jaxson de Ville rappelling off the scoreboard with a selfie stick, giving a first-person view of one of the NFL’s most colorful mascots.

This attention to detail carries, especially in franchise mode. Game commentators will now plug the national games of the week when you play on Sunday afternoon, giving real-world context to the season as a whole. There is also much better accuracy when it comes to discussing teams around the league, getting rid of some of the tired pre-canned comments about a team to dig deeper, especially when a season has been devolving from the game plan. For example, if you’re playing with a run-first team but choosing to throw the ball, the commentary team might make a comment directly about the offensive coordinator changing things up for the season, or surprising the rest of the league.

In franchise this is also capped off with a weekly wrap up of the games by NFL Redzone’s Scott Hanson, who spins around to highlight some of the biggest plays, check on the season leaders, and give out the weekly awards. It just makes everything feel more impactful in the larger picture of the NFL.

Top to bottom this is the best Madden there has been. It takes everything brilliant added to last year’s game and takes it to another level. It’s the best playing, best feeling, best looking entry of this generation — and may rival the greatest entries the game has ever had, like Madden 04. There’s still work to do when it comes to AI trades in the franchise mode, and expanding Be a Pro, but these are nitpicky qualms when the game is this good from top to bottom.

9/10

Madden NFL 27 is a must-buy for any fan of the series, whether you’re a regular player or a lapsed fan.
