The forward pass is overrated. Why go through the effort of building a huge playbook and doing something as insane as throwing the ball in the air where anyone can grab it when you can simply run, punt, and wait or the other team to screw up?
UAB Wins With Heart, Gumption, and 23 Yards Passing

It’s a philosophy that has kept Jim Tressel in only the finest of sweatervests for a decade now, and it worked for the UAB Blazers last night. Despite having only 23 yards passing and being outgained in every major offensive category, UAB beat Southern Mis 30-17 last night.

Southern Miss’s real problem? Besides missing their starting running back and star wide receiver DeAndre Brown? Trying. UAB ran the ball, punted, and watched as Southern Miss racked up 12 penalties for 100 yards, turned the ball over three times, and gave up a game-ending pick six for the final score.

The lesson is that effort is overrated, kids. In life, punting can be winning, especially if “punting” is “staying in grad school indefinitely until the inheritance comes around.” As UAB proved last night, sometimes that strategy works perfectly.
