Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) – Josh Nesbitt and Anthony Allen both ran for two touchdowns, as 11th-ranked Georgia Tech withstood a deluge to defeat the Virginia Cavaliers, 34-9, and snap an eight-game losing streak at Scott Stadium.
Georgia Tech 34, Virginia 9: Yellow Jackets Rush For Four TDs
Jonathan Dwyer rushed for 125 yards on 25 carries, while Allen finished with 103 yards on the ground for the Yellow Jackets (7-1, 5-1 ACC), who had not won in Charlottesville since November 3, 1990.
Nesbitt had 82 rushing yards while completing four of his eight pass attempts for 85 yards.
Jameel Sewell threw for 168 yards on 18-of-32 efficiency for the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-1), who had won their last three outings. Vic Hall made five grabs for 51 yards in defeat.
The Yellow Jackets limited Virginia to fewer than 18 minutes of possession time.
After Virginia went three-and-out to start the game, the Yellow Jackets marched across midfield and to the 44-yard line before they were forced to punt. Returner Chase Minnifield, though, botched the kick and Jerrard Tarrant recovered for Georgia Tech at the 11.
Later in the drive, Nesbitt had a touchdown run negated by a chop block infraction. The visitors ultimately settled for a 24-yard Scott Blair field goal.
Virginia sniffed out a fake punt on the Yellow Jackets’ next offensive series. The gamble gave Virginia the ball in enemy territory. On first down, Sewell hit Tim Smith over the middle for 23 yards to the Georgia Tech 21. Robert Randolph eventually booted a 49-yard field goal, tying the game with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
Nesbitt fumbled on the ensuing possession, and the Cavaliers capitalized on the turnover as Randolph was true from 19 yards out in the early stages of the second stanza for a 6-3 Virginia lead.
Nesbitt then capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive with a one-yard plunge and Blair drilled a 23-yarder as the half ended to give Georgia Tech a 13-6 advantage at the break.
The Yellow Jackets got the ball to begin the third quarter and Nesbitt orchestrated an epic 18-play, 82-yard march that chewed up nearly 11 minutes of the clock. Allen’s one-yard scamper stretched the lead to 20-6.
Randolph drilled a 30-yarder nine seconds into the final stanza, but Allen countered with a 20-yard sprint to the end zone. Nesbitt cemented the win with a two-yard run with a bit over three minutes to play.
Demaryius Thomas had 76 yards on three receptions for Georgia Tech…The Yellow Jackets racked up 362 rushing yards, while Virginia’s ground attack consisted of just 30 yards…The Cavaliers were 2-for-11 on third down.
