Carolina Must Make Its Residents Angry

The Carolina Hurricanes are the most penalized team in the NHL so far this season, and a lot of the blame for their disappointing start can be attributed to the amount of times they’ve been a man down in their first ten games. Canes Country takes a look at their penalty numbers through ten games, and how their penalty kill the past five games has drastically improved. That would be essential, you would think.

The Canes took a ho-hum 78% Penalty Kill rate the first 5 games and brought it to a top-shelf success rate of 88% these last 5 games, with 2 of the 3 goals allowed against the league-leading power play squad of the Avalanche. And while the first analysis after 5 games showed 47% of goals allowed came short-handed, that ratio the last 5 games has dropped to only 20%.

↵Canes Country attributes the improved PK to the spectacular play of Cam Ward, but there’s no doubt those numbers need to be reduced even more as they move forward. Although cutting down on penalties isn’t necessary for success; eight of the top ten most penalized teams in the NHL have winning records.
