Antoine Walker Picked the Wrong Place to Do Too Much: The Real World

The saga of Antoine Walker as a basketball player was a narrative of squandered talent. He was big yet deft, a power forward equipped with a shooting guard’s touch, but never consistently made those skills part of a winning team, making three All-Star teams and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals just once as a main option in Boston, then piggy-backing in Miami for his lone ring. He also, to put it kindly, expanded his physique. This is the sort of decline that takes a player good enough to earn a maximum contract in 1999 and makes him a salary figure acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008 for cap relief and nothing more.It will be his off-court overextension, however, that defines Walker’s legacy. Walker was arrested in Las Vegas this July, and stories began to leak about his titanic debt obligations. Today, the Boston Globe compiles those stories, and adds more, in the stunning tale of Walker’s fall.

Rumors of gambling problems have metastasized to million-dollar judgments against Walker in decisions favoring J.P. Morgan Chase and Wachovia. The high life of multiple houses, a fleet of cars, and lavish team dinners on Walker’s tab has given way to questions about why five people had access to his credit card. And, sadly, the philanthropy for both underprivileged children in Boston and support a large entourage of friends from his own rough childhood are seen now as gifts given with money Walker could ill afford to spend.

It’s easy to forget that professional athletes making millions of dollars don’t take home the dollar value of their contracts. Between taxes and extravagant lifestyles (the Globe cites NBA players and agents who allege that burning through $2 million or more in a year is not uncommon), the vast majority of the money athletes take in is not money saved for a rainy day. Walker, when all of his expenditures are combined, was probably no different. And so he becomes another athlete whose name has gone from box scores to tax liens.

Walker is currently looking for a job so that he can begin repayment of his debts. Perhaps the NBA should hire him as the league storyteller: His own cautionary tale is sadly spell-binding.
