Besides 49ers QB Alex Smith, who else is a smart pickup on the waiver wire?
Week 8 Add/Drop: How Long Can The Chiefs Stay With Larry Johnson?
ADD
Jamaal Charles - Larry Johnson finished with 49 yards on 16 carries, bringing his season average up to a miserable 2.7 yards per carry. How long before the Chiefs give up on him and start Jamaal Charles? Besides Johnson’s on-the-field lack of production, he’s gotten himself into hot water off the field. Charles finished with a tidy 8.25 yards per carry average on Sunday and a 5.0 yards per carry average for the season. Jump on the Jamaal Charles bandwagon early!
Shonn Greene- When the Jets drafted RB Shonn Greene in April, people questioned how there would be enough carries for Thomas Jones and Leon Washington and Shonn Greene. The answer? There wasn’t enough carries!! Until Leon Washington got injured on Sunday. Greene went off for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Now that Washington is out for the season, expect a LOT more Shonn Greene. Thomas Jones is still the RB1 for the Jets, but with a rookie quarterback and an offense that’s topped 300 rushing yards for each the past two games, Shonn Greene should be a solid fantasy producer.
Michael Crabtree - Crabtree is unstoppable! Well, maybe not unstoppable, but he sure looked good with a five catch, 56 yard performance on Sunday. San Francisco’s uncertain QB situation hinders Crabtree’s fantasy value, although the switch to Alex Smith at QB could mean better days for Crabtree.
DROP
Donnie Avery - He’s trying, he really is. On another team or in five years Donnie Avery could be a very good wide receiver. Right now, on this team, he’s not producing enough to be worth a spot on your fantasy team. If he’s still on your team (and he’s currently on a roster in 51% of CBS Sportsline leagues) it’s time to cut him loose.
Jonathan Stewart (Trade) - The Bills had allowed a 100-yard rusher in every game since Week 3. Last week they allowed a 200 yard rusher! So what do the Panthers do when facing the Bills? Throw the ball 44 times while only running 25 times in a devastating loss. Maybe the Panthers will accept offensive planning like that but your fantasy team shouldn’t. You’ll need to keep him as a handcuff to DeAngelo Williams, but if you don’t have Williams try to trade him (preferably to the team with Williams) so you can get some sort of value from him.
Reggie Bush - Remember when Reggie Bush was so talented that anybody who didn’t take him in the NFL Draft was an idiot who deserved to be fired? And by “fired” I mean “physically thrown into a fire”? Yeah, well, that’s not the case anymore. Even with the Saints scoring 46 points against the Dolphins, Bush was an afterthought with three rushes for ten yards and three catches for sixteen yards. Yes, he did have a rushing touchdown but it’s clear that’s going to be the exception this season and not the rule. Bush is now behind both Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell (both of them undrafted rookie free agents!) on the Saints depth chart. Injuries to those guys would certainly change things, but right now you can’t count on Bush to get even ten carries in any given week.
